Carretera a Montañana
Zaragoza 50059
Spain
+34 976 71 4934
The monastery is 10km from Zaragoza on the road to Montañana and Peñaflor. Like so many other buildings in the city (Lonja, Saint Bernard Chapel, etc) it was built under the patronage of the archbishop Hernando de Aragón, a cousin of Carlos V. The monastery was founded in 1563. An impressive wall surrounds it and there is a cloister within. There are still monks living there. The monastery was abandoned in 1835 due to National Expropiation but in 1903 the monks returned. In 1774 the painter Francisco de Goya painted seven wall paintings. It is open the last Saturday every month. It is open on the last Sat of each month. Admission is free.

Belchite

A gruesome battle
Belchite
Zaragoza 50130
Spain
Take the N-232 and then turn off on the C-222 to get to the town of Belchite, a war monument. Here a particularly difficult battle of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) was fought. In August 1937 the Republican Army began an offensive attack on Belchite, which had been taken by Franco's troops. There was a siege and the village was bombed and destroyed. The ruins that still stand remind us of the consequences of war. One kilometre away, the new Belchite was built. Old Belchite remained as a ghost of destruction, which is quite sad to walk through, crossing the old Calle Mayor and reflecting on the war. Several films have been filmed amongst the ruins. The most recent was Baron von Munchhausen. You can get here by coach with Autobuses ABASA, Calle Lérida 3.

Ejea de los Caballeros

The largest town of the five in Cinco Villas
La zona de las Cinco Villas
Zaragoza 50600
Spain
Ejea, 85km away from Zaragoza, is the biggest town of the Cinco Villas (Five Towns) region. In addition to a population of 15,000, Ejea also boasts Romanesque elements: the church of El Salvador, with a tower with battlements (12th century), a church-fortress which reminds us that we are near the border (with the old Kingdom of Navarra) and has an interesting altarpiece (15th century). In the church of Santa María (12th century) it is said the first Courts of Aragón were held (several kings of Aragón here held Courts). Only a small part of the castle is preserved, and it is next to the apse of Santa María. You can get here by coach with Autobuses 5 Villas, Avenida Navarra 89.

Muel Ceramics Museum

Traditional local ceramics and exhibitions
Carretera de Valencia, km 468
Zaragoza, Zaragoza 50450
Spain
+34 976 14 5225
Muel is famous not only for its ceramics but also because of the paintings by Goya in the Nuestra Señora de la Fuente Hermitage. The village is only 25 km away from Zaragoza. The origins of the ceramics lie in Moorish craftsmanship (prior to their expulsion from Spain in the 17th century) and in Valencian pottery. The fusion of these two styles resulted in a characteristic decorative look which particularly utilises green and blue glazes. Ceramic production in Muel had almost died out altogether by the beginning of the 20th century but, after 1964, the Aragonese Regional Government actively encouraged its development by founding a museum and workshop-school which has achieved international recognition. The museum also puts on temporary exhibitions of ceramics by important artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Miró and Chagall.

Museum of the General Military Academy

Museum of military academy
Carretera de Huesca, s/n
Zaragoza 50071
Spain
+34 976 51 7000
The history of the General Military Academy, from its foundation in 1882 to the present day, is traced through the exhibitions which fill seven rooms. The collection dedicated to the "Sitios de Zaragoza" (1808-1809)is particularly impressive. Thanks to original documents and manuscripts dating from the War of Independence, the heroic defence of the city in the face of the Napoleonic siege is explained. A new museum dedicated to the siege is being set up in the old house which belonged to General Palafox, often known as "The Defender of the City". Visits are guided and must be in groups. Admission is free.

Tarazona

Mudéjar town
Autovia N-122
Zaragoza 50003
Spain
Just 80km from Zaragoza, Tarazona is easy to reach by car: follow the road to Pamplona and then take the N-122. When you get there, admire the splendid views of the Moncayo mountain. It's also worth visiting its beautiful Gothic-mudéjar cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century. The Bishop's Palace is Renaissance in style, as well as the town hall, which has a façade where Hercules and Cacus are represented. There is a famous octogonal bullring which dates back to 1780. The town's narrow streets evoke mysteries, crimes and passionate stories, like those written by Bécquer, a Spanish poet who lived in the Rúa Alta. It was also in this town that King Alfonso IV married Leonor of Castilla and Cisneros was made cardinal. If you're there in the summer, don't miss the Cipotegato festival (a fun tomato battle).
